Goodbye ABC Family. Hello FreeForm!
ABC Family announced that the network will change its name to FreeForm in January 2016. The new name seeks to reflect its viewers, who the article refers to as Becomers—the age group in which people are becoming adults.
I for one can agree that the network does an excellent job of appealing to its target audience. It’s one of my few go to channels. But, I’m not sure how I feel about the new name. One reason being 10 years from now when I accidentally say ABC Family I’m going to be ridiculed by all of the new young “becomers” for my archaic reference. (That was a joke…sort of.)
Kidding aside, even though I don’t totally understand the meaning behind the name FreeForm other than the actual definition of freeform, I think a new, savvy name matches the pace of how we millennials try to live our lives.
Many of the shows on the network are less than stellar examples of what is traditionally deemed “family oriented,” so in that aspect the family in ABC Family has long not suited the content of the network.
Nevertheless, I’m certain as long as the network continues to provide its viewers with funny, dramatic and relatable shows they can expect a faithful viewership no matter what its called
